On January 16, 2020, the world’s largest COVID-19 vaccination drive kicked off in India. “As many as 1,91,181 people were vaccinated on Day 1 as India began its nationwide vaccination drive against Covid-19,” said Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, adding that the vaccines were a 'sanjivani', meaning life infusing, in the fight against the deadly virus.

Sanitation worker Manish Kumar became the first person in the country to be vaccinated against the coronavirus, receiving his jab at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi. The initial phase of the vaccine roll out is focused on front line workers like Manish - sanitation workers and health workers, followed by those above the age of 50 years.
