NEW DELHI: Lawlessness and complete disregard for women again surfaced in Uttar Pradesh where a national level kabaddi player was beaten up by close to a dozen men. This was revenge, for a complaint she had filed against an earlier molestation attempt.
Dolly Singh, a well reputed athlete, was assaulted in Kanpur and received serious injuries. Last month when she was in the town, she had been harassed by some of these men and warned of dire consequences if she approached the police.
“When I had come back home a month back, some locals in the village misbehaved with me. On June 12 some 10-12 boys with their faces covered came and started abusing me. They hit me. They did so because I complained against them," Singh said.
Singh also blamed the local police for their apathetic attitude towards her complaint, since she had visited even higher officials like SSP and DM regarding the harassment. "I have met the DM, SSP and other officials and identified the men behind the attack. But no action has been taken so far. They are a habitual offender," Singh told India Today TV.
"The doctor has now advised me rest for a month. I have my exams on June 25. What will I do now? My career has been ruined," she added.
According to the Kanpur SSP Sharad Mathur charges have been framed and arrests will soon follow.
"This is an unfortunate incident. I assure you that I will personally look into it and get the FIR registered. Police should have taken action earlier. Government will intervene and justice will be done." Gaurva Bhatia Samajwadi Party spokesperson said.
The Samajwadi government has been in the dock recently for the brutal murder of a journalist reportedly at the instance of a minister in the government. The government has so far, refused to take action against the Minister pending investigation.
