SRINAGAR: A middle-aged government employee was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the restive Sopore town of Jammu and Kashmir.
Altaf Rehman, 46, was shot multiple times from a close range by unknown gunmen in New Colony area of Sopore. The gunmen managed to escape from the area.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (North), Gareeb Dass said the slain worked in the health department but he had no information about the circumstances that led to the killing.
"A police team has reached the spot and we have started investigations," Dass told The Citizen. He had no information about the survivors of the slain.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the killing.
The incident comes in the backdrop of threatening posters bearing the stamp of Tehreek-e-Taliban Jammu Kashmir that appeared in the town last week, warning action against people who deviate from the "path of Islam."
Earlier, unknown gunmen recently killed two persons associated with telecom sector in Sopore with the police making no headway in the case so far.
