"Raped by a Delhi Auto Driver" German Woman Complains after Two Months, Writes to DCW

NEW DELHI: A German woman has filed an FIR with the police after 72 days of allegedly being raped in Central Delhi. The victim had first approached the Delhi Commission of Women on February 5, that helped her in getting the complaint lodged.

The 19 year old woman, who was here in Delhi for charity work, alleged that she was raped by an auto driver when she asked him for directions back, on the night of December 14 last year, when she lost her way in the streets near her central Delhi hotel. After the act, she didn’t go to police, horrified as she was, but sent an email to DCW on February 5 and narrated the incident to them seeking intervention.

In a statement issued by the DCW it is explained that, "She asked for directions from an auto driver. Instead of dropping her safely to her hotel room, the auto driver assaulted and raped her in the dark." The victim alleged that she was able to run away from her assailant but was again intercepted, this time by a bunch of men who tried to molest her again. She could get away only when she bit the tongue of one the men. The commotion which was raised scared the molesters and forced them to flee the spot.

"Devastated, she wandered towards the main road and sat down on the pavement. A young man who was returning home from work found her in that state and without asking her about what happened to her he dropped her back to her hotel. The victim was too scared to go to the police because she was in a foreign land, very young and not sure of what to do," the statement further read.

The FIR could only be filed on 24th of February after the woman returned to Delhi on 19th. "The victim came to the Commission on the evening of February 19 and the Commission immediately counseled her and helped her report her case to the Police February 20 after which the police facilitated her medical examination on the same day," DCW statement said.

The victim was staying in Delhi with a male friend who too worked with her. She is said to have not told about the incident to him either. On being contacted by The Citizen, the police station Prasad Nagar said they have no knowledge about the incident and asked this reporter to contact ACP Abhishek Dhania, Karol Bagh, who could not be reached on phone.
