With the start of this year’s Premier League looming large before us, fans all over the country are champing at the bit, anxious for the first ball to be kicked come the fifteenth of August. A question on everybody’s mind surely is which attacker will claim the much coveted Golden Boot for the highest scorer in the competition. With last year’s winner Luis Suarez having made a blockbuster move to FC Barcelona over the summer, the race looks to be closer than ever for the premier League’s most feared marksmen.
Here are the top contenders for this year’s Golden Boot:
Wayne Rooney
A player who has become synonymous with united over the past decade; Wayne Rooney looks a rejuvenated player under new manager Louis Van Gaal. After having a superb pre-season, Rooney will be looking to get out of the blocks flying, and hopefully sustain his form till the end of the season. How many goals he nets this season will go a long way in determining where United finish this time round.
Daniel Sturridge
Rooney’s England National team strike partner Daniel Sturridge will be looking to take up the mantle from his ex-team-mate Suarez by picking up this season’s Golden Boot. Having finished second to the Uruguayan last season, Sturridge will have to fill the void left by his controversial team-mates departure to give Liverpool a chance to replicate last season’s success.
Diego Costa
Chelsea’s latest acquisition has been looking superb throughout pre-season, scoring some delicious goals in the process. Coming from a league where he gave Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi a run for their money, the Brazil born front-man will be looking to finish the season at the top of the scorer’s charts.
Edin Dzeko
Manchester City’s Bosnian forward ended last season on a great run of form, and will be looking to carry it forward into the new campaign. Given the known injury struggles faced constantly by City’s other forwards Sergio Aguero and Stevan Jovetic, expect Dzeko to end the season battling for the Golden Boot.
Romelu Lukaku
The want-away Belgian striker finally made a multi-million move away from Chelsea to Everton, where he spent all of last season on loan. Given that he knows the players and is familiar with Roberto Martinez’ setup already, it isn’t too unrealistic to expect the big centre forward to start banging in goals for the Mersyside club right from the off.
The Premier League season kicks off on Saturday, the fifteenth of August, when Manchester United plays Swansea City. Make sure you don’t miss any of the action!
