Vienna's Welcome Note To Syrian Refugees Will Make Your Heart Melt
Refugees in Vienna
NEW DELHI: The world is a fairly negative place. This is evinced by some of the hateful comments and responses to the growing refugee crisis. As millions of people flee their homes, it is worth reflecting on the circumstances that make such a tortuous journey -- where safety is compromised and access not a guarantee -- worthwhile?
People are escaping the war in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Palestine, South Sudan, Afghanistan… the list goes on. In these parts of the world, people’s lives are at risk; there is no food or healthcare, no access to education; sexual violence is an everyday reality; and forced slavery is rampant. When an overcrowded shanty little boat at sea is safer than the land you have called home, desperation gets a new context.
Given this scenario, the world MUST do more for the refugees that are fleeing circumstances that are not of their making. Syria, where a large number of today’s refugees come from, is racked by conflict where government forces are pitted against brutal rebel militias, including the Islamic State. The world’s powers -- the US, several European nations and gulf nations -- are supporting these rebel militias, conducting air strikes that have contributed to civilian casualties and lack of safety.
The Syrian war is not of the Syrian people’s making, but it is their problem, and for the powers that have contributed to it to turn a blind eye to the desperation of the Syrian people is reflective of how messed up this world is.
Amidst all this doom and gloom, there are a few instances that remind us that humanity -- bless it -- is not always inhumane. In particular, take the below picture that was taken by Nikolaus von Schillinger at Vienna West Train Station.
It reads:
“We have prepared for supporting you during your stay and as you continue your journey.
Members of the Austria Federal Railways, Caritas [Christian charity], the Vienna paramedics and the police are here at the railway station to meet you.
You can recognise all members of the assistance team by their special clothing. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask them.
Many Viennese are supporting us as we distribute food and water to you. Interpreters (translators) are available. Any medical assistance you may need can be provided on site.
We are doing our very best to organise assistance.
You are safe.
The City of Vienna.”
