The award winning Indian stoner film M Cream is now available on Netflix. Active in over 190 countries and boasting a sum total of 86 million subscribers, Netflix has emerged as world cinema’s newest tour de force. Originally founded in 1997 as a DVD rental service by entrepreneurs Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings, Netflix is today to the forefront of a digital revolution.

Despite open hostility by the legacy networks, the online streaming platform has witnessed a steady growth over the years. Buoyed by a diverse slate of programming and celebrated for a slew of high quality original series, Netflix is unarguably a force to reckon with. It’s already apparent that millennials are flocking to Internet video by the droves, and largely eschewing cable or satellite television; thereby disrupting the prevalent structure of film distribution and video dissemination.

It is against this rapidly evolving backdrop that players like Netflix and Amazon are poised to be the game changer. Although its core base is the US market, Netflix is fast gaining popularity internationally with nearly half its total subscribers currently from outside the US.

This is part of a clear-cut strategy by Netflix, one that anticipates the changing cinematic landscape with a penchant for risk and innovation. Indeed the platform has succeeded in generating a loyal and committed fan following on account of critically acclaimed and daring original series such as Narcos, House of Cards and Stranger Things to name a few. Having recently launched in india earlier this year, Netflix has been dedicatedly expanding its library of Indian content ranging from Bollywood blockbusters to notable indies to award winning documentaries.

M Cream is an Indian independent feature film that follows the adventures of four friends who set out in search of a mythical variant of hashish. Through this premise, the film introduces a contemporary youth perspective on a variety of socio-political issues. The film received the ‘Best Feature’ award at the Rhode Island International Film Festival and was screened at several international film festivals across the world. Written and directed by

Agneya Singh and starring Ira Dubey, Imaad Shah, Barry John, Tom Alter and Auritra Ghosh among others; M Cream was released theatrically in India this past July. However, like many independent films the release was limited to urban metros.

The recent Netflix launch, on the other hand, is universal and unrestricted by geography or a limited number of screens. “The advent of the digital age has provided the ultimate weapon in the arsenal of the indie filmmaker. No longer are we at the mercy of the traditional studio distribution system. An increasing number of viewers prefer to watch films from the comfort of their own homes. I am confident that the platform provided by Netflix will enable our film to reach the widest audience possible. It’s incredibly exciting to say the least…” commented writer/director Singh. Well, it certainly seems that a brave new world of cinematic experience is in the offing… Time to Netflix and chill!
