NEW DELHI: Delhi’s ugly racial face again came to light with yet another incident of a barbaric racist attack. A Manipuri youth was racially abused and beaten with a wooden stick by three men near his house in North Delhi's Burari area with the assault so brutal that he landed in the hospital with a broken skull and injured limbs. His only fault was that he was trying to teach civic rules to a man who spat on his foot.
The Delhi police have arrested two men in this case while the search for the third accused is still on.
On Saturday, 27 year old Brilliant Horam went to a stationary shop at the Bengali Colony market in Sant Nagar around 6pm. All was going well till a youth while rinsing his mouth spat on Horam’s foot.
When Horam protested, the accused started hurling abuses at him.
"I asked him to apologize, but a tall man came and pushed me to the ground and started calling me names. Soon two others joined him, one of them being my friend's landlord who punched me on the jaw. Before I could react, one of them hit me with a stick on the head," Horam, a civil services aspirant recalled. He then passed out only to find himself at the hospital when he woke up.
John Zimik, President of a Manipuri tribal community Tangkhul Katamnao Long, while describing what had happened said “On Saturday, Horam went out to buy stationery from a local shop. While he was returning home, some men chewing paan spat on him. When he objected, they attacked and injured him. He received many stitches on his head”.
“We immediately filed an FIR and two of the accused have already been arrested. They will be produced before the Tis Hazari Court today. This is the first time such an incident has taken place in the area. We demand that DCP (North Delhi) Madhur Verma immediately arrest the third accused,” he added.
The Delhi Police have arrested two people, identified as Vinod Kumar and Dinesh, who are local property dealers, in this case.
"We are trying to nab the remaining accused. A third person, Devender Kumar, has also been arrested on a separate complaint by Manipuri community members for abusing them for lodging a complaint," said Additional DCP (north), Brijender Yadav.
