ALIGARHL: Even before the embers sparked by the ABVPs contentious role in the controversy over a Dalit youths suicide in Hyderabad have ebbed , the BJPs student wing has stirred yet another acrimonious debate. This time in Aligarh.

During the recentvisit of Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani to Aligarh. the Uttar Pradesh unit of the ABVP presented a memorandum to her demanding that action should be taken against those Aligarh Muslim Students Union who have allegedly criticised the government.

The memorandum which was handed over to her by the state organising secretary of the ABVP Deepak Rishi also included a dossier of newspaper clipping to support the alleged claim.

The above memo also claimed that the University was not giving reservations to SC and ST students on the pretext that such quota admissions were not applicable to it since it was a Minority Institution . The ABVP has demanded that the HRD Minister should take immediate steps to ensure that the AMU is not " allowed to flout constitutional obligations on the admission quota".

The memorandum also demands that the provision at AMU for mandatory elementary Urdu courses in some classes should be scrapped.

It may be mentioned the ABVPs demand comes at a time when the Supreme Court is in the process of deciding AMU 's status as a Minority institution. And the controversy has been raked up at different political levels.

The HRD Minister however refused to make any comments on the issue of AMU during her visit to Aligarh. She was here to attend a function at the Tika Ram Girls Degree college affiliated to the Agra University.
